I'm certainly interested in all this and haven't amassed 1200 citations/articles/papers. What would you recommend as prerequisites for understanding this better for someone (like me) who isn't in a grad program but has a BS in econ?

You already have the tools you need Mykel; you just need to dive in. First think I would do is to read Melanie Mitchell's book "Complexity". Melanie is one of the nonresident scholars at the Santa Fe Institute, which is the Mecca for this stuff. Next, go to the SFI website and sign up for the next free online introduction to complexity course--Melanie usually teaches it--to get some hands-on experience. You are going to love it.
